Fake client brief Update

In my last newsletter, I created a moodboard and fake client brief to motivate me and get my creative juices flowing. I’ve been working very s l o w l y on this (like, 30 minutes at a time every few days), and it didn’t come together as quickly as I would have liked. However, I’m happy with the outcome, as I always am when I give myself permission to take it slow. My starting pattern was heavily influenced by Grandma Moses, and I think it shows. I started with this very sloppy sketch:

And ended here:

The Grandma Moses piece that influenced me is below. It’s hard to look at these side by side because I like hers SO MUCH BETTER, but I’m comforted by the fact that she didn’t even start painting until age 78 - I have at least 38 years to get to her level!

After I had a starter design, I began brainstorming patterns that could complement it, and landed on this set:

Then I thought about applications that would work well with these designs and made some quick mock-ups:

And I personally hate buying anything with a phrase on it, but I seem to be in the minority, so I added a phrase option. It’d make a nice greeting card, I think!

Because I get asked about this sometimes: I used Adobe Fresco to sketch and draw all of the elements in these patterns. Then I switched to Photoshop so I could look at it on a big screen, finalize colors, set the repeat pattern, and fix any issues. This is very typical of my process, unless I’m starting with analog art. I prefer Fresco because I can move back and forth between that and Photoshop more seamlessly.

Thanks for reading, and H A V E A N I C E D A Y ! :) :) :)
